Men In War (1957)

Robert Ryan, Aldo Ray, Robert Keith, James Edwards

This is a grim movie set in the Korean War. After being cut off behind enemy lines, Lt. Benson (Ryan) is trying to get the survivors of his platoon safely back to their own lines. He meets up with Sgt. Montana, (Ray) who is trying to save his shell shocked, mostly catatonic Colonel. Although at odds with each other, Benson and Montana throw in together to try to achieve their separate, yet similar, goals. Vic plays Corporal Zwickley, a young soldier who's been "sick" and so traumatized that he's lost a few of his marbles, too. Despite the camo helmet Vic wears in the first part of the movie, he's no Sgt. Saunders here. Vic plays this spacey soldier as a rather sweet but bewildered kid. This movie is more of a character study than a standard action/war film. Surprisingly, Vic gets a lot of screen time here - it's a good role that he does really well with (as usual). There are fine performances from all the cast; I especially liked Zwickley's buddy, played by James Edwards. This is another must-see if you're a Vic fan.
