The Barbara Stanwyck Show (1960)
"Key to a Killer"

Barbara Stanwyck, William Fawcett

You can tell right from the start (love the gown, Barbara!) that this is a fun show. Barbara plays her usual feisty, independent woman and is a formidable match for Vic's sometimes snarly, sometimes sympathetic hoodlum. When the deputy sheriff of the little mountain town of Granite Falls sees the wanted poster at the jail, he realizes he's just captured LeRoy Benson, (Vic) killer without a conscience. With Sheriff King in the hospital, it's up to his wife, Stella, (Stanwyck) to assist Deputy Homer in transporting LeRoy to Pinecrest, where the LA police will pick him up. Homer's taunts about the kid's mama enrage LeRoy, who jumps him from the back seat, grabs Homer's gun and demands that Homer cry "Mama", then shoots him anyway. LeRoy commands Mrs. King to unlock the handcuffs which bind them together. Realizing that once he's free, LeRoy will probably kill her, too, Stella throws the key over the cliff, telling LeRoy he doesn't want to drag 115 pounds of dead weight around. With the crashed car out of commission and stuck being cuffed together, LeRoy and Stella set off through the hills, both of them trying to save their own hides. Can Stella find the key to this messed up kid and stay alive? Vic and Barbara are a great combination! Although it gets a bit corny at the end, I really enjoyed this one and highly recommend it.
