It's A Dog's Life (1955)

Edmund Gwenn, Dean Jagger, Jeff Richards

Vic's the uncredited voice of Wildfire the Bull Terrier. This movie tells the adventures of a dog from the Bowery whose search for his father (who abandoned Wildfire's beloved mother), takes him through the ugly world of saloon dogfights, to a pleasant life at the stables, back to the dogfights, and finally to the world of dog shows. Uh…Wildfire wants to find his father and kill him as revenge for abandoning the family. Hardly Lassie-like, eh? But Wildfire's no cuddly collie-type do-gooder but a street-wise toughie with a good heart. (Any dog that loves his mother can't be all bad, right?) This movie has good reviews but I found it a bit slow and wondered why Vic wasn't credited. Did MGM want us to believe that Wildfire could really talk? I got a kick out of Vic's comment about being offered the part of a talking dog - "After the first shock I thought, 'Who knows, maybe they want a Method dog.'"
