Cimarron (1960)
Glenn Ford, Maria Schell, Ann Baxter, Russ Tamblyn
Okay, I confess - shortly after Wes (Vic) headed for the final roundup, I did a lot of fast forwarding so I'm not really qualified to give this an accurate review. I suspect Cimarron was intended to be an epic, sprawling, spectacular tale of taming the wild frontier as it told the story of Yancey Cravat, (Glenn Ford), fearless adventurer, and his beautiful, immigrant wife, Sabra, (Schell) who staked a homestead in the 1889 Oklahoma land rush and helped settle the territory. To me, though, 'epic' translated into 'way too long'. As Yancey is dragging his new bride across the prarie towards their wonderful new life, we first meet Wes, a rowdy cowboy who is leading a young friend of Yancey's (Tamblyn) into a life of crime. Wes pops up a couple more times, usually drunk and disorderly and each time meaner than the last, mostly to give Yancey a chance to look like a big hero. At least Vic gets some screen time and a few good close-up shots. Not much of a part, but Vic puts a lot of life into it (well, except for his very last scene). :-) But sorry, I just didn't care for Yancey. Don't think it's heroic to take off and leave your family for twenty-five years while you chase adventure. Don't try to sell that to me as true love, either. I recommend taping this show and watching with the remote in hand. (It airs twice 11/01/01 on the Western channel - 8:30am & 5:00pm pacific.)
