Blackboard Jungle (1955)
Glenn Ford, Sidney Poitier, Anne Francis
This classic teacher vs. gang punks movie marks Vic's film debut as malicious bad boy, Artie West. He turns in a passionate, menacing portrayal of the young gang leader who hates the new teacher. (Glenn Ford) Set in a New York City high school for boys, the film is about an idealistic new teacher who comes to the violent school in the 'hood and learns a few things himself, including the difference one person's influence can make. Vic is not the only one with a standout performance in this well-acted movie; Sidney Poitier is great as Miller, a punk who has the potential to make good. Vic does so well as the evil influence that it gets him a contract with MGM and typecast throughout much of his career. A disturbingly powerful movie even now, Vic's riveting performance makes this a must-see (heck, a must-have) for any Vic Morrow fan.
