Tribute To A Badman (1956)

James Cagney, Don Dubbin, Irene Papas, Stephen McNally

Not a big part for Vic in this western about a 'badman' rancher, Jeremy Rodock, (James Cagney) who's used to dishing out his own particular brand of justice (usually hanging) but Vic turns in another fine kid-with-a-chip-on-his-shoulder performance. Unlike the wicked Artie West, Lars Peterson is a basically good kid, the disillusioned son of Cagney's ex-partner-turned-horse-thief, Mr. Peterson. Lars is disappointed when he learns of his weak father's thieving but he's also hurt by the hardened Rodock, who had treated Lars like a son until the break with Mr. Peterson. After Rodock's men kill Mr. Peterson, an angry Lars strikes back at Rodock by helping to rustle his horses. Rodock catches the rustlers and makes 'em walk barefoot over 80 miles of Colorado wilderness but the defiant Lars takes his lumps like a man. (A sunburned man with really sore feet.) Oh, there's a love story here, too, but I found myself hoping she'd run off with the younger man who was not only better lookin' but seemed like he'd treat her a hecka lot better than crusty old Rodock. Ah, but love is often blind (and dumb, but we'll talk about that more when we get to 'Cimarron'). This is a good western and good Vic role, you'll want to see it next time it pops up on TV.
